Spirit of Math Contest (SoMC)
Organizer Background: Canada’s Authority on Math Education (About
Spirit of Math)
"This is not just a math contest; it is a leap in thinking."
Spirit of Math (SoM) originated in Canada and is a global leader in after-school gifted mathematics education, boasting over 30 years of history in excellence.
● Founder’s Distinction: The core philosophy of the curriculum comes from Mr. Charles Ledger. He was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the highest honor in Canadian education, recognizing his outstanding contributions to cultivating students' logical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
● Global Influence: Currently, Spirit of Math has expanded to over 40 countries and regions worldwide, providing high-level mathematics training to over 11,000 students every week.
● Authoritative Recognition: For many years, it has been selected by Maclean's and Canadian Business as one of Canada's top educational institutions, with graduates spread across top universities globally.
The 2026 Spirit of Math Contest (SoMC) is its annual flagship event, designed to discover mathematical elites with logical analysis skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. This is an international stage allowing students from Hong Kong and Macau to step out of the classroom and compete synchronously with top students from North America, Asia, and Europe.
Contest Features & Objectives
Unlike traditional competitions that emphasize mechanical drilling, SoMC places greater importance on a student's "Mathematical Thinking":
● Logic First: Question design focuses on Logical Reasoning and Pattern Recognition.
● Cross-Disciplinary Skills: Trains students in reading comprehension and key information extraction through long-form word problems.
● International Benchmark: Results are ranked against students of the same grade globally, allowing parents and schools to objectively understand the student's international standing.
● Honor Roll: High-achieving students will be listed on the Spirit of Math International Honor Roll, which serves as strong proof for overseas study applications or building an academic portfolio.
Eligibility
We welcome all students interested in mathematics to participate; no prior Spirit of Math curriculum background is required.
● Primary Division: Grade 1 to Grade 6
● Secondary Division: Grade 7 to Grade 8
Assessment Scope & Sample Questions
The contest questions are uniquely designed to test a student's true mathematical strength.
Below are simulation examples for reference regarding the style of questions:
【Challenging Thinking: Sample Questions】
Spirit of Math questions test not only calculation but focus heavily on Logical Reasoning and Pattern Recognition.
1. Junior Division (Grade 1-2)
● Question: Observe the following sequence: 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, ?
● Answer: 96 (Pattern: Each number is double the previous number)
2. Intermediate Division (Grade 3-4)
● Question: There are chickens and cows on a farm. There are 5 heads in total and 14 legs in total. How many cows are on the farm?
● Answer: 2 Cows (Logical Reasoning: If all were chickens, there would be only 10 legs. The extra 4 legs imply there are 2 cows).
3. Senior Division (Grade 5-6)
● Question: If today is Friday, what day of the week is it 100 days from today?
● Answer: Sunday (Concept of calculating remainders)
